More like 3.5 stars because I like the characters and the idea of the book. Just too much set up and slow parts for me. I have nothing else to say until after I read book 2.

Great set up for the trilogy and fantastically engaging characters. Cannot wait to read the second!

The story is good but the execution is bad. I don’t even know half of the back story yet but it’s brought up in a conversation which adds to my confusion. I was curious at first but it became repetitive to the point that I ask myself when will I get the answer? I really thought this would pick up but the amount of confusion I had in the first half just didn’t work well for me. It’s not a good introduction to the series so I won’t be continuing this one unfortunately.

Just not for me, unfortunately.

The writing was fast-paced and plot intriguing enough to keep me reading through the night twice in a row! The mix of adventure, magic, politics, and high stakes with multiple POVs made for a gripping read.

It also has significant advantage, at least in my eyes, over its fellow YA fantasy titles in actually focusing on the fantasy element and building it up (as opposed to, say, investing heavily in angsty romance). The characters, consisting of dual protagonists and several key secondary figures, are all interesting, the multi POVs well-suited in telling the story through different eyes. Most of them have really good potential for development as the story unfolds and I hope, in this one aspect more than any other, I won't be disappointed in that expectation.

As the first book in a quartet, it certainly has a lot going for it to make the reader invested in continuing with the series post-haste (and as such I'm already on book 2)!

Im re-reading this series and absolutely love it! Hans is a very intriguing main character. I love seeing the persona of Cuffs Alistair through Raisa and then see his actual turmoil on his chapters. Raisa also intrigues! Her princessly naivety combats her true intelligence at times and I like the dichotomy. Seeing her growth especially was great!

This is a classic fantasy novel with heart, mystery, and testament. Han has never fully fit in anywhere. The clan who took him in doesn’t trust him, his thieving days are over, and he has his family to take care of. Not to mention the silver cuffs around his wrists, impossible to take off, weigh heavy on his mind. Until he finds the amulet. Until his whole life is ruined after taking it. Until Raisa ana’Marianna comes across his path and their fates are woven since. I loved this book, even after multiple reads.
