THIS SLAPPED SO HARD! I can’t wait to read the next!!!
Interesting to see how polarizing the reviews of this book are. I fall somewhere in the middle.
The biggest problem with this book is that it's 500+ pages of setup. Stuff happens, but not enough, and the characters are pretty one dimensional throughout. There's plenty of room for development, but 500 pages is a long prelude to action.
If you like YA fantasy, you'll probably like this. If you're not sure, I'd recommend reading a summary on wikipedia and then diving into book two. I'll stick with the series for a bit, but I'm not sure I would recommend plowing through this one.

There were many elements of this book that I loved, not least Han. I'm really looking forward to reading thw rest of the series

Loving this series already. I thought there was great character development, enough action to keep it interesting, and really looking forward to the next books. I think Raisa would be the kind of girl Aelin Galathynius would be friends with.
We started off slowly but Chima pushed me into a world that I simply wanted more and more of. I LOVE the characters, and you know what a character junky I am. Our female protagonist is someone I can get behind. She is strong, funny, and relatable. The male protagonist, squee!!! He reminds me of a pirate king and I love it! The plot went all over the place, which made it hard to predict (something I rather enjoyed). I am eager to finish the series and hope that the rest of the books keep me smiling.
Actual rating: 4.5 - the half a star removal was mainly because I wasn't all that into all of Raisa's love interests. Like, none of them are good for you? Stop falling for every boy that talks to you, sweetie, you deserve so much better than that.

This book suffers from problems with pacing. It moves very slowly for about the first half. That wouldn't be such a problem except that I didn't care for Raisa. I nearly left it unfinished. But Han was an interesting enough character to keep me holding on until things eventually picked up. The last third of the book had me hooked. I am going to try book 2 in hopes that it lives up to the second half of this one.
DNF'ed after 120 pages. I didn't connect to the characters or the story at all :-/
