Despite coming out more than 15 years ago, I do think this book still holds up today. There’s a solid plot with a well-thought out world spanning different kingdoms and classes. Each character has a distinct voice, and the narrative is pushed along with very few pacing issues. I felt like I was reading something new, and not just recycled fodder.
There are times where we get a bit info-dumpy, and even though Williams China attempts to package this information to readers in interesting ways, there are times where the information just doesn’t seem necessary to understand the story better.
Some of the character’s decisions, mainly the FMC’s, are impulsive and irrational. Her relationship withMicah is very strange—I had assumed she did not like this man up until they started to make out. I do not get her infatuation with him at all. Same with her crush onHan. I really wished the “kidnapping” was drawn out more but now knowing what I know, I’m not sure this is a feasible love interest (Unless I’m not getting his family history?) . I hate using the term “boy crazy” but she was very quick to kiss any boy she found remotely attractive and at very inappropriate times.
I also found the father extremely annoying with how he responded—not only when he discoversMicah essentially trying to SA his daughter by charming her with a spell (and then just standing there while they mack on each other) but in respects to his wife when it is so obvious that she too is charmed under Gavan’s illegal magic. Like why would you even go to the Cliffs after all this is revealed???
I will be reading the next installment. #TeamAmon

Re read: Same rating as before.
This is such a good YA fantasy. It takes a little patience but it pays off. I love the world building, the characters and the writing style. My favourite thing about this book is how it had me at the edge, so taut with worry for Raisa and Han.

Williams Chima has done a great job of drawing the reader in. She's one of the few women writers who can write some pretty convincing male characters without them being totally flat. Definitely excited that it's a series!
