This reminded me a little of the Thief series in that it's fantasy starring young adults with its own detailed historical background and lore.

It's been too long since a book has had me so captivated. This is such a great story. I can't to continue the series.

Wow. That ending? Wow.
The first 100 pages were meh, it steadily built up to being awesome, and then the night at the ball was just BOOM. It went shooting up. Now, I don't know whether I should read the next one or The Ask and The Answer (which are supposedly equally good).

RATING: 3.5 stars

Liked it, but felt that the dual perspective ruined the pace a bit, especially in the end, when I was really involved in the chapter and then it ended and the next chapter had a different rythm.

What.

Oh my 'Lanta. Okay, so I honestly don't know what to say about The Demon King. I had such a hard time figuring out what rating to give it so I just settled for five stars because I enjoyed it immensely.

So, the thing with this book is that it's written completely different from anything I've ever read, simply based on the speed of the story and the world building. Events happen slowly. Cinda Williams Chima takes her sweet time to give the audience a well rounded experience to getting to know our characters and their situation. The history and world is so new and complex that she does a right good thing in educating readers to understanding her novel perfectly, and by the end, I've never felt more comfortable. I feel like I'm in this world and know the ins and outs already.

Aside from the world building, another thing Chima takes slow is the relationship between our main characters, Princess Raisa and Han Alister (what a name!) and it's not even a relationship at this point (spoiler?), which I was really surprised and impressed by. This only makes me want to read the sequels to see how they grow gradually closer.

Now, for some love for Raisa and Han Alister (it's one of those names where you're compelled to say the whole thing). Raisa is completely different from other princesses. She's not afraid to speak her mind no matter the consequences. She stands strong by her ideas, such as not marrying until later, and honestly wants to be a good ruler for her queendom. Han is a young thief who has a legendary rep as a former gang leader. He's incredibly tolerable and still manages to surprise me with how dynamic he is. He has so many different faces that relate to his circumstances: Cuffs Alister - the thief, Han Alister - the breadwinner, and Hunts Alone - the lost boy.

Overall, this is an incredibly well thought out novel and maybe over a couple days I'll be able to decide where it stands on my list. Fingers crossed it becomes one of my favorite series.

Sam recommended. I can see why this series is one of his favorites. It’s so Wholesome. A princess who rebels against her privileged upbringing to give back to her people. She truly wants to be told the truth of her kingdom. A thief who leaves the streets because of the love of his little sister. He wants to save his friends from capture by the corrupt police. Blind bootleggers, altruistic teachers, omnipresent healers, mortal-enemy lovers. This fantasy it all.

*4.5
I love this series so much,it's a new favourite of mine. I can't believe I waited so long to pick it up!

I wrote a spoiler free review of the whole series on my blog: http://aideensbookobsession.blogspot.com/

Very slow start, so much so I almost DNFed it 30% of the way in, but I stuck with it and I'm glad I did. It slowly starts having interesting things happen more and more until by the end you're hooked.
