Didn't know what to expect so I was pleasantly surprised when I couldn't stop diving into the story. A few times I was annoyed at Raisa's apparent lacking intelligence before realizing it was her sheltered privilege screaming out. 1 or 2 plot devices were used but were forgivable. The characters are thought out and do fairly well avoiding cliches. This could easily be a television series to reach a broader audience, if casting & directing are done superbly well.

I am so confused! I actually enjoyed reading this (and I love Han), but some things really bothered me. Hope the next book get's a bit better~

I cannot say ENOUGH great things about this series. It is easily my favorite that I have ever read. It has a beautiful diversity of characters and you will fall in love with every one. I just finished the 4th book (The Crimson Crown) and the series gets better and better with each book, no slack whatsoever in the middle. HIGHLY recommend this if you like fantasy, romance, YA lit, etc. (Also, the writing style is beautiful and I found no errors in editing.)

A bit slow to start but when it did I couldn't put it down!

Here went my night.

Yes, you read correctly. Despite my reading slump that drove me to DNF more books that I'm comfortable with yesterday, despite today being my last day of vacations and as usual busy as hell, despite the objective flaws of [b:The Demon King|6342491|The Demon King (Seven Realms, #1)|Cinda Williams Chima|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1379482652l/6342491._SY75_.jpg|6528619], I couldn't stop reading for the life of me, and closed my reader at 6am pretty exhausted.

Worst is, I'm fighting the urge to start [b:The Exiled Queen|7801229|The Exiled Queen (Seven Realms, #2)|Cinda Williams Chima|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1285276245l/7801229._SY75_.jpg|9842102] right now, and I can count on the finger of one hand the number of times it happened with a YA Fantasy series.

I hated [b:Red Queen|22328546|Red Queen (Red Queen, #1)|Victoria Aveyard|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1449778912l/22328546._SY75_.jpg|25037051].
I thought I would die of boredom in [b:A Court of Thorns and Roses|16096824|A Court of Thorns and Roses (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #1)|Sarah J. Maas|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1546406962l/16096824._SY75_.jpg|21905102].
I didn't care one way or another about [b:The Young Elites|20821111|The Young Elites (The Young Elites, #1)|Marie Lu|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1407318399l/20821111._SY75_.jpg|25217978], and I quickly lost my interest in [b:Shadow and Bone|10194157|Shadow and Bone (The Shadow and Bone Trilogy, #1)|Leigh Bardugo|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1339533695l/10194157._SX50_.jpg|15093325].
Don't even mention the borefest that was [b:The Kiss of Deception|16429619|The Kiss of Deception (The Remnant Chronicles, #1)|Mary E. Pearson|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1389804901l/16429619._SX50_.jpg|22617247].
I loved the Lumatere Chronicles, but we're talking about [a:Melina Marchetta|47104|Melina Marchetta|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1277655889p2/47104.jpg], and [b:The Demon King|6342491|The Demon King (Seven Realms, #1)|Cinda Williams Chima|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1379482652l/6342491._SY75_.jpg|6528619] sure can't compare with it one second.

And yet, despite my issues, I enjoyed my read like nobody's business.

First of all, I ended liking the main characters even though they're far from perfect - or perhaps because of it. See, when it comes to series that go on for 4 books, I genuinely think that flaws are needed in order to picture a believable growth, especially when we meet the characters at 16.

Raisa, the somewhat selfish princess, shows the best of intentions but sometimes fails to think things through before acting, resulting in several illed-thought-out decisions that border on TSLT behavior. She's immature, annoying, and I understand why some readers had a hard time standing her. Yet despite being royalty, her issues - feeling trapped and needing to take control on her life - seemed pretty valid to me, and I LOVED the fact that she could kiss several guys without falling in love in a happily ever after fashion right away (please, am I the only one who cringes at teenager's weddings?). You go girl. I just cannot wait to see her grow into a character I can admire, and I have a feeling that I will.

Han's past as a street lord made me roll my eyes a little, because COME ON NOW, the guy's sixteen for crying out loud! That's how life rolls in the mountain city of Fellsmarch, though, so I chose to suspend my disbelief and accept it because sometimes, you just have to. I genuinely liked his free and impulsive personality and if he comes as a little whiny sometimes, you have to recognize that the guy needs a break! Oh, well. I'm not sure why, but I LOVED the guy.

#SorryNotSorry

Both of them make mistakes, and you're likely to fight the urge to strangle them at some point, but I cared nonetheless, for better or for worst. Moreover, after all this build-up, the anticipation to see them interact together is killing me. There, I said it.

As for the plot, many readers complained that nothing really happened in this book and that's true that it reads more like a big introduction to the world of the Seven Realms than anything else. Yet again, I was hooked from the very beginning and couldn't stop reading, so there's that. Not to mention that I guessed all the twists, because if you read Fantasy before, you just cannot help. Did it bother me? In all honestly, no. That's what I call the good kind of predictable, because every time a guess was confirmed, I was glad it was. [b:The Demon King|6342491|The Demon King (Seven Realms, #1)|Cinda Williams Chima|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1379482652l/6342491._SY75_.jpg|6528619] is full of Fantasy tropes, but it stays clear of girl hate and instalove, and then I was able to enjoy the hell out of it. Don't judge me.

However, my biggest complaint would be the way grief is handled. I don't know about you, but when characters face awful events, I expect to feel something, and sadly I didn't. It was [b:Mockingjay|7260188|Mockingjay (The Hunger Games, #3)|Suzanne Collins|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1586722918l/7260188._SY75_.jpg|8812783] all over again, letting me stunned and rather indifferent when I ought to despair.

► All in all, [b:The Demon King|6342491|The Demon King (Seven Realms, #1)|Cinda Williams Chima|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1379482652l/6342491._SY75_.jpg|6528619] was a good introduction to the Seven Realms, and if I can't recommend it blindly, if you're not put off by Fantasy tropes and characters who take stupid decisions sometimes, I'd say that you should go for it, because it's damn entertaining and addictive.

3.5 stars. I enjoyed it and I would like to read the next one but it didn't keep me hooked the entire time. I think the constant switching of POVs detracted for me, particularly at the start.

3.5 stars

Not quite what I had expected but enjoyable still

Really liked the world building and characters, cant wait for more of character interactions and actions XD

LOVE LOVE LOVEEEEEE!!! ohmaigosh favorite book series ever! Whenever I am in a jam and have writer's block I reread this series (sometimes it only takes a couple of chapters) to get my inspiration reeling! Love the character Raisa. Both Han and Raisa capture our attention well. They are truly well developed characters. I always recommend this book!

This is a great book, but is the first book in a series and most of the book is setting up for the rest of the series. It doesn't give a lot of satisfaction as a stand alone book. It will still be a good book for our YA audience.

The Demon King is a book that had been on my TBR for quite awhile. I have been wanting to pick this book up for so long and finally had the motivation to and I wished I read it sooner because I really enjoyed it.

This is a high fantasy series that I literally knew nothing about going in. This book is quite hard to describe without spoiling because I feel like the less you know about the book the more surprises there will be along the way when you read it and you will probably enjoy it more.

This book mostly follows the point of view of two characters. Raisa and Han. I did prefer Han's perspective int he beginning and about halfway through I preferred reading from Raisa's. I actually did like both perspectives overall.

Yes I will be continuing on with this series because it is really good and I love the world and characters. I will say that the beginning was quite slow and it took awhile for me to become invested in the book. Once I understood the world and what was going on, the book picked up so much and I was hooked and did not want to put the book down. This is definitely and underrated fantasy series.
