Read via audiobook (Wavesound from W. F. Howes Ltd)
The pace picked up for this installment and resulted in an excellent mystery! I appreciated that most of the characters had distinct and strong personality in this novel (maybe the protagonist is still lacking). The interconnectedness of each character possibly being involved with the womans dissappearance meant the reader could sympathise with the likable characters, but they remained untrustworthy which added extra dimension to the reading.
The setting Harper has created within the bush was also superb - excellent descriptions of the dark and damp, the sounds of critters, the confusing walking tracks, being stuck hiking with painful personalities.
Aaron Falk seems to throw himself into danger to be heroic in the second to last chapter of each of his books (so far) which is getting a bit tired. If this fit better with his general disposition it might be feasable, but it feels like sacrifice to make the character likeable.
Overall, a fun murder mystery with more drama and satisfaction than The Dry!

So, this was really enjoyable. 5 women walk into the wilderness for the sake of some corporate team building, and then 100 things go wrong. Ultimately, 4 return and 1 is missing. The book begins with stating that Alice (the missing woman) has a mean streak that could cut you. But I didn’t find her truely nasty. I wanted her to be more snide, more of an asshole, so I could really hate her. But maybe it’s better this way, to see that she was also a human being with shades of good and bad.
The red herrings that Jane drops at every corner are super fun. Any of those women or a serial killer’s son, or the adventure guide or nature could have offed Alice. Or she could just be missing and the story unravels differently. And this guesswork is super fun.
This wasn’t as lyrical and poignant in its writing as The Dry. It read more as a page turner mystery where I raced through the pages, whereas in The Dry, I was really basking in the writing. But she builds tension and a sense of foreboding that had me obsessed with getting to the end.
The ending was ok.
