Whooo! This book! This book was a trip! I was not expecting this. I had know knowledge of the source material that inspired this book other than the obvious. I spent the first half of the book wondering when Black Tom would come in, and when he did it was a huge surprise for me. I thought the person who became Black Tom died. Guess what? He didn't.

It's a short book. Less than 2 hours to read according to my Kindle. Definitely pick it up if you've got time to kill.

This book will transport you into 1920s harlem, and you will feel nostalgia as well as anger and hurt for the treatment that Tommy receives. The introduction of mysterious and magical forces are natural as are Tommy's reactions (he seeks to run away like any sane person would do!) But inevitably Tommy is transformed into
Black Tom ... at the hands of white men who were so full hate and racism, indifference to anythin  but what they wanted and a hunger for power that they failed to see that when you take everything from a man - his safety, his father, his reason for living... he no longer has a reason to fear you and will side a sleeping King, Cthulhu if need be... to get vengeance.

What a treat!

I bought this book blind, as a quick easy read for when I needed a little break from full-on novels. And to be honest I wasn't really expecting too much from it. But I'm happy to say I was quite wrong. This is a great little read.

Although this is a novella things don't feel like they're being rushed. And there's a lot of diversity in here, a number of different elements to get you thinking. Even though the story revolves around the downtrodden, the author manages to keep you upbeat while reading. The characters, especially because of the era it's set in, the 1920s, are very intriguing and I would have loved to get a lot more involved with their histories and personalities.

There is a major perspective shift in the middle of the book, and it gnawed at me when it happened, but I quickly got over it and actually found the story was probably better for it.

The one downside? I was left wanting more, a lot more. I think there's more than enough story, character and atmosphere here to make a very compelling full novel...or three.

Thanks for reading my review, I hope it was helpful. But, please remember, this is simply my take on this book and you may have a completely different opinion.

How I select a star rating for each book is explained in my profile.

Quick read dragged out over a month. Prose felt flat and some the dialogue was tepid but it was an enjoyable read. Carried a little from it's core of 'what if Lovecraft wasn't the most racist man alive' but the setting of 1920s black new york was a solid translation.

"I'll take Cthulhu over you devils any day"

I want more of this kind of story, 'cause this was amazing.
From the way this story was structured to the little references and nods, just amazing.
