this was one of the best horror books i've read in a really long time. i'm pretty desensitised to the genre but this actually made me have visceral reactions to certain things. there was so much tension and i was feeling a sense of dread and anxiety the entire time. i feel like christina henry did such a good job portraying mattie's personal survival story as well as trying to survive the creature on the mountains. only wished i could have read it in more atmospheric weather to really heighten the experience.

I really liked this story -- but I don't recommend listening on audible because the narrator was AWFUL! I got sucked in from the first chapter and so I kept going, and I'm glad I did -- but I would have preferred to read it myself. It has everything that could make a horror story, a creature you never really see... Isolated woods with a man who's abusive and controlling, and strangers who wonder into the woods at the worst time possible. I definitely recommend reading it. It is a shorter story and doesn't take long to listen to or read.

20 year old Mattie is held captive in a secluded mountain cabin by a man claiming to be her husband. She has no idea how long she has been there, and she has very few memories of her previous life. When some cryptid hunters find their way to the remote area, Mattie finds hope of escaping, but she doesn't know what monster on the mountain is the most dangerous.

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this one, but I do know I was thoroughly entertained the whole time. Christina Henry did an excellent job of creating a tense and chilling atmosphere. I was all in on this book until the ending. The ending left me with more questions than answers, which isn't necessarily "bad" but I also am pretty confused and find myself wondering what actually happened. If anyone else has read this I would love to discuss!
