Just as good on the reread! Cozy, nostalgic, wistful, sweet.

It started off a bit slow for me, but it picked up considerably towards the middle and kept up through the end. It's a love story, but not the typical kind: this novel is about the love between a single parent and his only child. Overall, I enjoyed it.

Take a New York woman turning 40, who has a loving relationship with her dying father, a mostly satisfying job and boyfriend, and mix in some time traveling -- all resulting in another delightful Emma Straub family story that is by turns both funny and poignant. After celebrating and indulging a bit much for her birthday, Alice wakes up as a 16 year old and in her bedroom in the house she shared with her father 24 years prior. After her initial confusion and disbelief, Alice decides to set her father on a track to avoid his future health issues while also figuring out how to return to her 40 year old self. Relationships -- family, friends, romantic -- are explored with warmth and sensitivity. The novel takes place entirely on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and its locale is portrayed with much joyful nostalgia and love for the neighborhood. Straub has once again hit the mark for me in this captivating and very absorbing family story.

3.75. something i’ve learned about me is I really enjoy time travel mixed with themes of family/relationships. so wholesome with a good balance of fun and sad.

also loved the acknowledgements

This book is not at all what I expected.

I got this book for my 40th bday high school friends trip which seemed wildly appropriate. I expected a somewhat cheesy chick-lit book where the girl goes back in time and makes her life better because of a boy, peppered with some 90s nostalgia.

This is not that book.

This is actually a book about the love between a parent and a child and it’s just so much better than the book I thought I was picking up.

This book actually made me cry on more than one occasion and I really enjoyed it. Knocking of a star cause I feel like there could have been more 90s fun haha.
