I might need to reread this book again one day when I have fewer life distractions. I liked it, and it had some creepy parts, but it was confusing at times (and too long for this particular story).

I think the present-day portion was basically unnecessary. I would have enjoyed the book much more without it. All the good action took place in the past, and it took a long time to build up to it.

I really liked certain elements of this book, but I wish it would have been organized differently. I feel like The Deep & The Troop were Nick Cutter being himself, and this was trying to be...someone else. Too much was happening, and there wasn't enough information on parts I would have enjoyed hearing more about. It was really promising, but I had a tough time connecting with most of this book. This was a 3.5⭐ for me.

I said some variation of "ew!" out loud many, many times during my reading of this book. It's wonderfully gory but just as atmospheric and eerie. This story easily spans a few horror subgenres with elements of action, folk, and bits of comedy here and there. It's long but intense and fast paced; I couldn't put it down. Nick Cutter is seriously talented and I'm looking forward to reading his other books.
