An absolutely amazing book and wonderful audiobook. Parrado's story offer life lessons about love and friendship from a background of experience rather than just talking and preaching. If you've come to this book from searching the Andes plane disaster then this book definitely fills in any questions about that experience.  I love how by the end, I felt bonded with everyone because Parrado was able to give each man their humanity.

I don't typically rate memoirs/biographies because it seems wrong to judge the way in which people recount their own personal, real life stories. However, Nando Parrado is such an incredible writer that I personally have to rate this five stars, not for the content but for the way that this book is written. There were so many instances throughout reading Miracle in the Andes that had me viscerally reacting and not just the moments of pain or horror. In the pages you can feel the resilience and the pure love that radiates from Parrado.

This book was brilliant, haunting, visceral, and moving. The audiobook was excellent. It felt like I was listening to a podcast. I jumped to the e-book form of the book because I wanted to read it faster. Although this book deals with heavy topics such as death and survival, Parrado's voice was uplifting and inspiring. I enjoyed looking at the photographs that he provided and the map of his trek away from the Fairchild. It helped place the events of the memoir in context. I highly recommend this book for fans of the film Society of the Snow.

"...I am still guided by the vivid apprehension that came to me on that frozen glacier: Even here, even as we suffer, life is still worth living. We are humans. We all suffer. We all one day face our own personal Andes. And in the end, we all die. The only way to make sense of those difficult truths is to love. Love is our guide and our protection. It is the only true form of survival. That simple, strengthening wisdom is the gift the mountains gave me. That is the true miracle of the Andes."

Content: death, some gore, swearing, descriptions of eating human flesh

At times, this is an absolute horror. It is often described so plainly, it is a horror in itself, to come face to face with the normalisation of such immense suffering. It is impossible not to reflect whilst reading this.

It gets a bit slow following the rescue - a fair bit seems unrelated to the story and the message as a whole. But still a gripping and worthwhile read.
