'I think you have to gamble in order to win,'

Not a massive fan of David Levithan's writing BUT this one was brilliant and I really enjoyed it!
It was fast paced and the alternate POV helped move the story along and develop the characters well!
5 stars and a new addition to my bookshelf!

alright
cheesy and dumb

~long desceiption for annananananannanan~
for starters all the characters seemed the same to me, angsty adolescents who know more about life then adults and are confused about love :,( . they all had one defining characteristic but not actual personalities. violet the circus girl. kate the artist. ryan the poet. mark the base ball player. violet and kate were unrealistic like goddamn youve never met before and now youre gonna spend a year together shit dawg. and mark got over ryan too quick. ok are you happy anna

I probably would have liked this if I had read it as a teenager, but it didn’t really get me at this point in life. The story was fine but it wasn’t very well executed, and I found some of the characters’ behaviors very weird. There was potential, but it didn’t live up to it. Loved the ending though!

I agree with other reviewers...this is a quick, easy, enjoyable read with a cast of characters that fall flat at times. I enjoyed Kate's story a bit more, but there were definitely flaws in the outcome. It all came off as a bit too perfect for me. Kate had serious mental health issues and she just...got over them? Because she found the will to? I don't think that's how crippling anxiety works. I'm torn between 2 and 3 stars but am giving 3 because it really was such a quick, easy, and enjoyable read. Perfect for a flight or layover.

lots of scenes/moments that could have been More (explanation, exposition, detail, emotion etc etc) interspersed with moments that could have been Less (dramatic, mostly). very underwhelming from two authors who I generally love

5/5 stars.

What a beautiful book! Both of these authors are flawless. This was my first time reading Nina Lacour and while her writing took me a bit to get used too, I ended up really enjoying it. And David Levithan is amazing as always.

Also these characters were just so cute? Both Mark and Kate had such an adorable friendship. They're both such realistic characters and while this book is a bit crazy, all of the issues that these kids go through is just insanely realistic. Specifically,
Spoiler the fall out between Kate and her friend Lehna is something that actually happened between my best friend and I right at the end of our senior year and it was so hard hitting to see.
Every side character was developed amazingly as well. There were gay characters, lesbian characters, genderqueer characters.. It was AMAZING. And the whole book took place during Pride which added such an important touch. I'm actually shocked this book isn't talked about more in LGBT recommendations because it has really good representation.

As for the story, it's your basic coming of age story but because it follows a lesbian and gay character, it becomes so much more than it. It's about finding yourself and growing into yourself. Marks storyline especially was so heartbreaking but also beautiful, I'm sad this book was so short because I wanted to know so much more about him. While I loved Kate, I feel like this book focused solely on her and that's probably why I feel like I need more of Mark because Kate's storyline was a fit to this books length. But either way, her character was so enjoyable and she and Mark were just the cutest friends. They both worked so well together and following them on this short journey was such a treat.
Spoiler Also, Kate and Violet are so fucking cute and I just can't.

Overall I really enjoyed this book. It has its underlying themes and meanings which I'm sure I'll pick up on more and more during rereads. While this can seem like your average contemporary, I felt like it was much more than that and said important things about friendship, relationships, sexuality and community and I'm so glad i bought this one so I can reread it endlessly.
