Nice idea in theory. I can see authors intent in Michael being like God and unconditional love, however with eyes open to the world of DV and controlling, abusive, narcissistic men I can't help but see his character in the first half of the book as triggering for some. He has honourable intent, but he is still controlling and what HE wants from the relationship. Yes his lifestyle and desire for her was freedom, but it was him dictation and not allowing her own decision making. It was "MY WAY" or else. It was icky.
Read this over a decade ago and loved it just as much, maybe for different reasons this time. Kind of perfect to have read it during Easter season. I don't think this is for everyone and I think a lot of context may be needed before diving in but I just loved it a lot.
Loved this book
Second time through and still love it as much as before. Would recommend to anyone struggling with guilt and shame over their past.

This was a hard book to read and many times I thought about putting it down. The situations that the main female character goes through are hard and her coming to faith is so wonderful.
This is a book of redemption and forgiveness. Pick it up and read it. You won’t be disappointed.

This was an absolute heartwarming gut punch of a book in the best way possible. This book does such an incredible job of helping the reader feel a deep understanding of God’s redeeming love, His patience, His perfect timing, and His bountiful way of using people to bring others closer to Him. It deserves every star I could give it.
This book was amazing. It reminds me why I love Francine Rivers' writing. This book is the retelling of the story of Hosea and Gomer with a twist. This story is set in the California gold rush. Angel is a woman sold into prostitution as a child, and has known no other life, until Michael Hosea sees her one day. The resulting story is very moving and inspirational. The note after the story by Rivers is also very moving. With all the difficulties I've had in my life recently I needed this book as a reminder that everything happens for a reason.
