This was a solid detective/mystery that took on some very current issues - undocumented immigrants and distrust of the police force. It kept me hooked to the end and though I didn't appreciate the big reveal of who the killer was, I was impressed with all of the twists.

3.99/5 stars. I enjoyed this Jimmy Vega mystery. My only criticisms are: 1. Jimmy always seems to be in the in the exact place he needs to be to find out information only he is privy to that is crucial to the plot development and solving the case; after a while it becomes unbelievable because it is too unrealistic. 2. I frequently find Jimmy and Adele to be immature and annoying. 3. The change of writing style from the rest of the book interrupted the flow and made the denouement unfulfilling. That said, as a third generation European Canadian living on the prairies, I am consistently fascinated by Chazin's fictionalization of the Mexican and Central American immigrant experiences in the US, especially in light of the current US political climate. I also loved Mr. Zimmerman and really liked Wil. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

I’ve read all of her books and this is Chazin’s best. The Fire books are wonderful but I finally must admit that the Vega books are even better. (I still want you to write more Skeehan books Suzanne.)

The Vega books are about one of the most difficult problems in our country today and in this most recent one Chazin introduces a character that reminds me of someone that currently causes chaos on a daily basis. These books are eye opening. The mysteries, while very timely, keep the books racing to the end when Vega unravels them. There’s another one coming out early next year and I can’t wait. If you haven’t read Chazin’s books yet, find the first Skeehan or Vega book. You’ll thank me.

Fabulous series. I'm going to need to pace myself on the two remaining books because I'll be very sad to reach the end. Hoping for more books brewing in Ms. Chazin's mind ... :)
