The characters are without a doubt the strongest component of this book. They’re all well developed, vivid, and distinct which is even more important in a short, fast-paced read. It’s great to see such a developed female character in a narrative that’s accessible for all ages. Coraline is quirky, curious, adventurous, brave, independent, stubborn, reckless, and intelligent. I feel as though many readers will be able to relate to her personality and her actions. The storyline may be intense and creepy, but it’s also very fun. I also quite liked that not everything was entirely fleshed out. For example, there wasn’t much of the Other Mother’s backstory featured in the plot. It didn’t feel as though it was accidentally missed out and I didn’t find myself wanting to know about it while reading about Coraline’s adventures. Overall it’s a fairly stripped-back storyline that makes it much easier to be sucked in which is ideal in a shorter novel. And finally, the illustrations in this edition are fantastic and worth checking out.

There’s honestly nothing really to say here for criticisms. The only thing I would say is that, while it can be read and enjoyed by any age, I really wished I read this when I was younger and just a budding bookworm because I’m sure I would have appreciated it more. I think that’s where this book differs from that of The Ocean at the End of the Lane which is slightly more complex and feels more nostalgic for an older audience. Oh, and definitely read the book first before watching the movie. Whilst both are great, I just love the stop motion animation adaptation so much.
