I found this a lot more interesting that I anticipated. When I was a child, I was both interested in space exploration and underwater exploration, the latter probably because of the TV show "Seaquest" and various stories about Atlantis. The author covers several different facets of ocean exploration, but the book feels like a good survey (pun intended) rather than a mish-mash. The sections about deep sea mining are harrowing, and something that I definitely think that there needs to be more awareness about. Laura Trethewey is also upfront about how the ocean, past and present, is inextricably linked with colonialism and warfare.

This was a really interesting read! I heard about the book from Cassie B. herself :D I learned so much about the ocean and mapping. The author does a great job of organizing the book, and it's never dry (one of my problems with a lot of non-fiction). Super fascinating all around - but also depressing to read about how corporate/capitalist greed is wreaking havoc on our planet.

A brilliant look at a massively under-appreciated field of science. I’ll read anything and everything this author ever writes.

I kinda wish the Five Deeps Expedition had been its own chapter, instead of being brought up multiple times as the through line of the book. It made their story feel a bit disconnected for me. Aside from that, I enjoyed this book. Everything was well researched and explained in a very accessible way. I feel like I have a solid overview of the issues surrounding deep sea exploration now. The audiobook narrator did a good job.
