While I still enjoyed certain parts of this book, it is not as good as the first book in the series. This one suffers from many issues that I find in fantasy books: way too many characters introduced at once (to the point I cannot remember who is who), some sections drag on or slow the pace of the story, and building up parts that should be emotional fall flat as they feel clichéd/predictable. I did enjoy the direction the story went, but the execution left much to be desired.

As expected, book two was harder to get through than it was with book one. Tomi always creates a beautiful world and the plot seems to lead us to something more. I loved the boundaries being crossed and questions being asked within this book. I tend to lean more into a book when I’m beginning to doubt and get frustrated because it means I’m invested in what happens to these characters. On the flip side, the character development lacks for me. It felt like a lot of characters’ original structure was ripped apart with no solution in sight, or it was solved in a chapter and left at that. Lots of saying one thing, and doing the opposite. Book 2 syndrome hit heavy. The unity was gone, but I want to say it was for a reason to be explored in the future. I’ll have another read through of it soon. SUPER excited to see how book three goes!!! I AM DEDICATED.

I feel this book was a compelling bridge between book 1 and the coming conclusion of book 3. Yes, all of the characters, who are most all children, made mistakes and might have done stupid things, but I think most (all?) lost their parents and mentors in book 1 and were just trying to figure things out. I'm looking forward to the last book.
