It took me awhile to get into the flow of this book, and to appreciate the author's style. Confusion and uncertainty in the writing mimic that experienced by the characters. I found the ending too pat and neat. Rape scenes were horrific. Made me think about the Civil War in ways that I had previously had not - the historical aspects are very interesting. Some of the writing is incredibly beautiful.

The audio book is well staged. There were mysterious aspects of the story that drew me in and it ended in an unpredictable way.

I'm attempting to read a Pulitzer Prize winning book each month. Not impressed with this one. I really dislike the absence of Quotation marks in dialogue. While in some books it adds to the feel of the book like The Road, in this one it is just distracting.

Turbūt lėčiau skaitomos knygos atrasti nelabai įmanoma. O istorija turėjo būti įdomi: po JAV pilietinio karo dukra su savo beveik nebekalbančia motina atvyksta gyventi į psichiatrinę ligoninę. Ir dar per karą kažkur dingo tėvas. Daug kalbama apie traumas, apie psichinę sveikatą, karo palikimus ir taip toliau, bet čia ir užsibaigia visas smagumas.
Knyga parašyta taip klampiai, jog susikaupti itin sunku, pasakojimo laikas ir perspektyvos keičiasi vos ne kas skyrių - nesu prieš tai, bet kai viskas taip mėtoma iš vieno galo į kitą, darosi labai sunku, kad ta pasakojama istorija bent kiek rūpėtų. Ir viskas parašyta perspaustai vaizdingai, žiauresnės scenos aprašomos detaliai, bet susidaro įvaizdis, jog tas detalumas vien tik sukurti tą <i>shock value</i>. Net ir visa knygos atomazga pateikiama nerealistiškai ir niekaip neapleidžia jausmas, jog visa istorija labai paviršutiniška, paslėpta po tuo bandymu rašyti protingai, nors tai niekaip nesigauna.

Rape scene is just too graphic. I understand that war is a horrible thing, especially to women and children. Hints about the raping of the woman and her young daughter were tough early on. I can't handle graphic details.

A story of redemption and heartache brought on by the Civil War, and a central mystery, spun out thru the perspective of several different characters. The depth of despair, the vulnerability of women in society, and the brutality of the time are well portrayed. Characters are well developed.
