If you read this book literally, it's an acid trip of horrors. Godspeed to you. If you read it as a metaphor... well, hopefully you've sat through a few creative writing workshops. That's my biggest criticism of this book: the intended audience feels very narrow. It's also a bit on the nose, mean spirited, and too long. I still gave it 4 stars, though, because it's such an accurate depiction of being an angsty, teenage writer.

Utterly disturbing. I’ve not read much horror and this just gripped me in a way I haven’t had for ages. The first half was like watching a car crash; it was awful and getting worse by the second and I couldn’t look away. I love the critique of elitism and pretentiousness in the arts. I loved how Mona Awad explored the insanity of trying to fit in with people you hate - something most people pleasers can relate to. I thought the second half was interesting but for different reasons. I actually really enjoyed Max’s character but I with she’d done more with him. The Lion was a little pointless. Jonah deserved better!
This book was An Experience. Not sure I’m eager to repeat it but I am so glad that I read it.

Definitely more surrealist then I had expected, but redefines the dark academia genre and brings something entirely new. Not the most satisfying book, or generally the most easy to get through or understand (both in terms of the writing and the world), but a unique story whose surrealist elements stick with you.

I’m so disappointed in this book and I do not understand the hype. Maybe the book is too smart for me to truly understand what it was getting at and that is fine. I found myself bored, not creeped out at all and wanting more. Which makes me question myself when reading horror. 😅

I loved the way the author used words to describe things in ways that could be very uncomfortable. However after a while I just wanted to scream enough! I really enjoyed the first half 25% of the book. It had great potential. I loved Samantha at first and related to some of her feelings from when I was in my 20s but then she just became so, so, whiney. I couldn’t get invested in their story.

I was confused a large amount of the time. But I loved it. A book about a cult of delusional women is already an amazing read, and this one did it great. I was angry at the main character often, and she was not a reliable narrator, but that was the point. There was also a very queer vibe throughout the entire story, and sapphic murder is one of my favorite things of all time, so I strongly enjoyed it. I did guess the plot twist early on, but i wasn’t sure and i had so many thoughts in my head that i wouldn’t have guessed that that was the correct one. Overall, I loved reading it and could see myself re-reading to understand the more cryptic parts now that I know what’s happening entirely.
