Wow,
This book had me laughing and crying. This was Markus Zusak's heart and soul poured out into over a decade's worth of a novel. No, this isn't another Book Thief at all - so don't go in with that expectation, but this book was still so worth the read. My heart is full from the story behind this book and the story this book contains.
This is another book I'm proud to call an Australian gem (as it's not only written by an Australia, but it's VERY AUSSIE! I loved that and so much more about it!)

Definitely love [b:The Book Thief|19063|The Book Thief|Markus Zusak|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1522157426l/19063._SY75_.jpg|878368] MUCH better!
The Dunbar boys have potty mouths (despite being an editorial choice). The story was muddled and confusing at best. I still have no idea what happened in the book.
It was nice Zusak narrated his own audiobook. Forgot he was Australian. :P
I might try another of his books, but not before I reread :i:The Book Thief:/:. ;-)

I'll admit - I DNFed. But only because I had borrowed my mum's copy from book club, and she had to give it back. That said, I may have DNFed anyway. I found the style of writing a bit irritating, and as I think this book is more about the writing than the plot, I found it difficult to engage or care for any of the characters.
Then again, maybe I would have finished the book, because several plot points were intriguing: did the father come back into the boys' lives in the end? What guilt and motivation originally led Clay to build the bridge? Why was the father referred to as 'the murderer?'
Overall, some parts of the book were quite interesting, and I would have enjoyed seeing how the metaphor of the bridge turned out. And it's certainly a unique and brave way of telling a story about dysfunctional families trying to work through their issues. So 3 stars for that. But although it's not a particularly long book, it felt heavy, and wading through the elaborate writing wasn't particularly enjoyable. However, if you are someone who enjoys poetic-style novels, I would definitely recommend this book for you!

Another great book written by Markus Zusak. I can’t decide whether the Book Thief or the Brige of Clay is my favorite, so why not both? Truly 10/10, would read again.
4,5✨

I picked this up with the expectation of a quick yet thrilling read similar to The Book Thief or I Am Messenger. Quickly, I realized my expectations were incredibly premature. The first 100 pages were a bit difficult to comprehend until I really dug into the prose and plot. Stories of family pain, love, and turmoil are always difficult for me to read. This was a very deep and troubled family dealing with unmeasurable pains. I enjoyed the read and was genuinely enthralled with the story and characters. I hardly rate a novel 5 stars, so I gave this a 4.
