"He was a wasteland in a suit."
"The silence was something awesome - an enormous playground for the guilt to wreak havoc, to work him over - but it was a deception."
"There was running, there was living. There was discipline, perfect idiots."
"A calculated mess. A human nine-eleven. Or a woman becomes a country and you see her leaving herself."
Und ich könnte noch ewig so weitermachen 😍

Ok. Probably an unpopular opinion, but I just didn't like this book. There's a lot I liked structurally, but I just didn't really connect with any of the characters. In the end, I didn't particularly feel invested enough to care about the resolution.
Listened to on BorrowBox.
My heart.
Markus Zusak has had a place in my heart since I read The Book Thief. I loved listening to him read this book. Especially the ending.
At the start, I was confused and worried it wasn’t going to be perfect. I listened anxiously waiting to bond with the characters. But as usual Markus Zusak snuck in through the pace of his delivery and I loved them all. The flaws and the rawness of it all. The injustice and the beauty of the story of Penny Dunbar. The sadness in the story of Michael Dunbar.
Mostly the heart of Clay. Ugh Clay.
The turning point for me was when Abbey left Michael and when Penny’s Dad forced her to leave. Both tragedies gripped me and I was endeared to the characters forever.
I definitely cried at the end, I loved it.
I was so so upset about Clay’s lost love story.

What a boring disappointment. If the slog weren't hard enough - they did that thing where they get the author to read the book and they needed an actor to at least try to inject some life into it.
I really wanted to love this book. There were parts that I did love - mostly the backstories of the parents. And certain lines in the book that had that Markus Zusak way to pull at your heartstrings. This is why I think it warrants 3 stars. But in the end, the story and prose were too confusing for me and I felt little attachment to the characters. I really had to push to get through 550 pages, and it felt like a relief to finish. It might be unfair to compare, but finishing was a very different experience than with the Book Thief where the characters and story stuck with me for days. I can see the appeal to some audiences, but this one just wasn't for me.

This one is really hard to rate... the story of the Dunbar boys and their family is amazing but the writing style was so verbose and clunky. I had a hard time connecting with it, even though these characters were jumping off the pages. When I started this book I thought a 2 star would be generous but it really grows on you and the story comes together pretty nicely. It is definitely one of those books I think I would revisit. Although, unpopular opinion?? The whole literal building of the bridge part seemed so pointless to me.
