(probably more of a 4.5, but rounded it up for simplicity)
At first, I was not totally gripped by this novel. Luckily, four hours later, I was hunched over entirely invested in the story of this family. I loved it and there's nothing more for me to say.

I couldn’t finish this book. I was bored out of my mind and just couldn’t get into it. The characters, the plot, the mood; nothing captured my attention. It’s quite differe to The Book Thief, too, which wouldn’t be bad if the story was captivating. Unfortunately, nothing about it sparked my interest.
Was it me? Was it the book? I’m not sure; it was probably a combination of both. All I know is that I’m majorly disappointed with this novel.

Just a couple of men dealing with grief. It has a few elements similar to The Book Thief some of which land beautifully while others don't. Too long to be good.
I really couldn't get into this book. I only finished it because I was waiting for another hold to become available.
It should be subtitled men are bad at feelings and our society does not encourage them to be better.

Fans of "The Book Thief" have been waiting for Zusak to write another novel. When I heard it was finally being published, I could not wait to get my hands on a copy. I knew that it would be extremely difficult for Zusak to write another book as good as "The Book Thief," but I tried not to let that affect my reading of "Bridge of Clay."
Overall, I really liked this book and I really wished I could give it 4 stars. It was a long read and at points a little slow. I found the characters to be very interesting, especially the women in this novel. The mother, Penny, and the friend of Clay, Carey. I even found the character of the dad's ex wife to be an interesting character and element of the story. In a book filled with boys and men, the women that were a part of the lives of these boys and men had to be interesting, strong female characters.
I am going to be honest and admit that I am not sure if I completely understand the overall point Zusak was trying to make with this novel. It was about family, love, loss, and dealing with loss. I guess when I finished to novel I was hoping for an understanding of the story and the characters as a whole, but I feel that perhaps I missed that somewhere.
