Could not get into it. Did not live up to the hype in my opinion.

The only thing that I gave more than 2 shits about in this book were Cyra and Akos. I could care less about anyone or anything else

A space themed Romeo and Juliet with characters who have special abilities. Akos and Cyra meet from places of conflict. Akos and his brother are stolen from home at a young age. Akos is eventually brought to help Cyra manage the chronic pain from her gift. Her father and brother have been using her gift to intimidate and hurt political opponents. Akos longs to return home with his brother. As he works and waits for escape he gets to know Cyra on a deeper level.

I loved the elements of the Sojourn and reaping benefits from other cultures trash. I liked Cyra’s fascination with learning and other cultures. I like how she changed over the course of the story. I like the way of honoring death and loss in a physical way. I felt like Akos transition from small child to Cyra’s relief wasn’t explained sufficiently. But I loved how he and Cyra struggled with hurting others.

The book moved slowly at times, but despite other reviews I didn’t feel it was overtly racist. In my head the harsh languages were closer to German or Chinese. And I saw the curly hair as more Latino or Israeli. (You see the bias you own.)

I still have book two on my to read list.

This was definitely one of those all-too-common cases where an author has a spectacular first series and then the follow up just doesn't dazzle. I had a really hard time getting into this, engaging with the characters or the narration. And when you take the character-driven story approach, the characters have to be engaging, relatable, sympathetic--something--and early on. That just doesn't happen hear and it makes the book a tough read.
