I had some personal trepidation when starting this book, as it doesn’t fall into my typical preferred fantasy subgenre. However, I did enjoy Divergent (the book, not the movie) and the premise of the book intrigued me. I didn’t think that the book was slow, as some other reviews felt.
There was an interesting imbalance in the background given of our two main characters. I found this curious since the book is written from multiple perspectives and leans heavily to one main character rather than the other. The backgrounds are then inversely proportional, heavily informative of one who speaks less while matter of fact and blunt when describing the others childhood. Interesting is the best word to use, because I wasn’t bothered by the difference, I found it thought-provoking; the writing style lent to me another layer of the characters upbringing.
I thoroughly enjoyed the story. I could go on and on about different facets of the book but there is one thing that stands out as either a warning or an invitation. I needed it to be said that these characters were 20-25 years old, rather than their supposed 14-16 age. The adult child thing was irrefutably my only hang up with this series (I’m starting book 2 as I finish writing this). It has never irritated me more than a child would have the thought processes and words of an adult in their mid-20’s more than this book. If you can push yourself past the age given and think of these characters as all in their 20’s then I believe you will have no issue enjoying the story.
To expound more on the issue, even if I were to put myself in the situations that were presented in this book, I don’t think my 14-year-old self would act, speak, or consider some of the things that these children do. Circumstance and experiences do control how mature a child may seem but there is still an undercurrent of innocence that remains, even in a 16-year-old.

I'm so glad I found this book 9 years after being obsessed with Divergent.
I just knew Veronica Roth had created another world for me to escape into and she did. I loved every bit of this novel- even Ryzek. I can't wait to read the next book!

Crya's and Akso's relationship was slow to bloom and everything in general moves at a slow pace. The sojourn was all together poorly written and was such a boring read. I also thought it was odd that for part 4 we immediately jump to Akso's point-of-view where he wakes up in Thuvhe. It just seems like too much of a jump for the slower, detailed pace that Roth has been keeping to. This book definitely doesn't chalk up to the Divergent series but the general idea and plot line can hold its own. I wish it had been better written though. That definitely took away from the story.
Well hot damn this was a book I liked. 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
No offense to the Divergent books, but your mummy has a better child now! Carve The Mark is younger but preferred by everyone, probably 🤷🏾♀️😍😍😍
Gotta read nook 2 asap!

I hate it when I'm disappointed for a book I was looking forward to but unfortunately this one wasn't a great one for me.
There wasn't anything inherently wrong with this book but it just didn't quite hit the mark. I liked the setting, the world and different cultures, I liked the premise and the plot but I found myself easily distracted and not entirely bothered by what was going on. The pacing was a bit slow, Cyra was a bit unlikable and I think there were a few too many characters involved.
In the end it was okay, not amazing or mind blowing, and it's unlikely I'll be continuing with the series. Shame!

Full Review on my blog!
Wow!!! Veronica Roth is back with a bang. And better than ever.
“Honor has no place in survival.”
Carve The Mark is an deeply riveting sci-fi thriller with non-stop action, heart-breaking betrayal, and an intense survival story that will keep readers flipping pages right up until the captivating ending. Carve The Mark is one of the most highly anticipated books of 2017…..and it without a doubt lives up to the hype! I devoured Carve The Mark and cannot wait for readers everywhere to read this fantastic book!
“You’re a Noavek,” he said stubbornly, folding his arms. “Brutality is in your blood.”
The pace was perfect, the world-building, which was CRUCIAL in this book, was flawlessly done. The visuals, as in Divergent, are very vivid in this book too. The point where I found out the reason for the name of this book; I think my parents thought I was going crazy the way I was jumping and squealing.
“He would die for his loved ones….
She has to kill for hers…..”
Veronica Roth also has a wonderful way of developing side characters without boring the reader. I love the complexity of the characters in this book. Each character has there issues/flaws and neither is all good or all bad. I want to keep this spoiler free, so that’s all I’ll say about this. Let’s just say, there is a lot of character growth throughout the whole book. This is the type of book that swoops in and steals your attention from the first page.
“Akos touched her face. When he first met her, he thought she was this fearsome thing, this monster he needed to escape. But she had unfurled bit by bit, showing him her wicked humor by waking him with a knife to his throat, talking about herself with unflinching honesty, for better or worse, and loving- so deeply- every little bit of this galaxy, even the parts she was supposed to hate…..”
Overall, I think this is a book you should DEFINITELY read if you are into YA. There’s romance, friendship, family bonding, and a whole new galaxy waiting for you. I’m excited about this novel and where it’s going and I can’t wait to jump on the next Sojourn ship she puts out for this series. I highly recommend it!

This book was so good! I love the characters and how they develop, and I love the world building. It had me hooked from the start. Roth has seemingly effortlessly just created a whole new universe with new rules and ways of life and it is wonderful.
Also my version has an epilogue to the Divergent series in the back, so it was interesting to briefly revisit that world five years on see how everyone is doing.
