Okay, well my day was immediately ruined when I read this ending during class. That was soooooo depressing, but I understood it completely.

I already knew what would happen at the end, and I quickly noticed the foreshadowing with Candy and his dog correlating with Lennie and George's story; how he thought he ought to have put the dog down himself because it was HIS dog. Although this was good imagery, it dehumanizes Lennie in a way.

But what the HELLLLLL that was messed up and sad for everyone involved. (Poor Curley's wife who just was a hoe to everyone and didn't even get a name.)
I don't know why this ending affected me so much, it just hit me hard in a way I didn't think it would.

This was a tiebreaker novel for me. I hated [b:The Red Pony|8732|The Red Pony|John Steinbeck|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1391231816l/8732._SY75_.jpg|1665907], I loved [b:Tortilla Flat|163977|Tortilla Flat|John Steinbeck|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1400859671l/163977._SY75_.jpg|890203], and I was reading one more Steinbeck to see if I really liked his writing or not. Turns out I loved this book so much. I went into it - miraculously - with only a vague idea of the plot, and made all my friends who had already read it shut up about it when I was reading, so I could experience it as naturally as possible.

It's an incredibly crafted book. The way Steinbeck builds tension in his scenes is unreal, and so is his power over natural dialogue. I was thoroughly invested in the book the entire way through. It was put together perfectly, and the length made it even more impressive. To craft a gripping narrative with characters deep enough to get really invested in is a feat that not every book achieves. To do it in under 100 pages proves Steinbeck's command over language and character. I really loved the experience of reading this book.
