There's a movie out there called Brave Story. It's also a book, which I haven't quite finished yet, though I've been meaning to for years. The movie is superb, full of adventure and dragons and good and bad and everything in between. It's the sort of story that you feel, warming your bones up from the inside.

This book is much like that movie, and not just because there's a sidekick lizard person. I've always been a sucker for finding yourself types of stories, and this was a really good one.

If you are like me, you might want to stop reading in the early chapters when Tess is at her most unhappy and unlikable. Like me, you might hear the term "ruined herself" for the second, third, fourth time in as many chapters and wrinkle your nose.

Read on.

Tess as a character kept me in this book. I felt everything she felt like I had been there myself. The book didn’t even need a plot because her life is plot enough. Rachel Hartman has again created a riveting work that I couldn’t put down.
