This is a special kind of fantasy/sci-fi which I think is unique. The author doesn't waste any space, and the story of this pretty short book could have been told over five times the length by other authors. It is really an intriguing book and I am going to read more.

highly entertaining read. apparently this is pretty seminal for the modern fantasy genre and i get it. writing definitely has a distinct flavor - whip fast, gripping, zany and humorous - and zelazny is able to create a really rich fantasy work in a shot glass size of a book. story had a pulpy noir-esque feel to it in the beginning then flows into a rollicking high fantasy adventure. there’s a quippishness to the prose that i found endearing for the most part. some memorable tongue in cheek lines that were unique and beyond stupid that they somehow stood out as brilliant to me (lol).
i snubbed out my cigarette, picked up another, and removed perhaps two hundred pounds from my feet by resting in a brown upholstered chair beside his bookcase.
so we fought on, and i was down to a hundred men. let's be brief. they killed everyone but me
glad i got to sample some of this author's writing and will prolly check out more in this series and some of his standalones in the future.

Ugh, I hated it. I didn't care for the main character at all. Everything felt choppy and rushed.

Maybe it's the first person perspective. Maybe it's all the booze and cigarettes. It felt more like a Raymond Chandler novel than a fantasy epic.

The idea for this book was really great. I just wish someone else had written it. I didn't care for Roger Zelazny's writing style, and would love to have read this same story by someone that I consider more skilled at writing.
That's not to say that I won't continue on with the series. I'm interested enough to go on, but probably won't be in any hurry to do so.

Nevar nosaukt pat par fanfika līmeņa stilu, jo pat tur ir labāki rakstnieki.
