A very dry read, the second half of the book felt very anticlimactic and I felt the story lacked something for me.

I couldn't really get into this story about a middle aged, divorced newspaper columnist. There were some poignant discussions about forgiveness and how hard it is and who you're really doing it for (yourself or the person you're trying to forgive). Overall the premise wasn't that captivating for me and I forced myself to finish. If I hadn't gotten a complimentary ALC from Libro.fm I likely would have DNF'd this one.

I’m just not sure what the point of this was - it had nothing to do with the 2020 election so I’m not sure why it was even mentioned on the back cover?

There were moments of brilliance in terms of writing style but it was all covered up by weird plot conventions and low points of boredom that didn’t make sense. I wish the author had leaned more into the conflicts which would have made the book better (infidelity, female rage, a single woman’s place in society, but alas).

Very odd.

I want sure if I actually liked the main character Liz in the first half of the book because she acted like she was better than everyone else. However, she started showing her flaws and became a lot more likeable and then I really enjoyed where the book went and how it ended.

An interesting story about a woman living life after her husband cheats on her then divorces her. Liz makes some questionable choices based in anger?hurt? even though the divorce happened years prior. I liked the ending when Liz was finally able to start moving on and making amends for some of her behavior.

I feel awful leaving this review. I always worry when I do 2 stars that the author will read it and I never want to say negative things or make someone feel bad, but I really did not like this book. I almost DNF'd so many times. I absolutely hated the main character. She was an awful human being. I had no investment in how things turned out, but I read another review that said the last 30 pages were the best part of the book, so I went ahead and read it, but ugh I wish I just chose a different book.

Thank you to Harper Perennial for the physical copy and to Harper Audio for the advanced listening copy in exchange for an honest review.

This book scores an even 2.5 stars from me. It was entertaining enough, very middle-of-the-road, but it didn’t stick with me at all. It’s been about a month and I would have no recollection of what Her Turn was about, if not for the notes I took while reading it.

I love reading about women who have just had it with their lives. There were a few passages of Liz’s inner thoughts that made me chuckle, and I enjoyed that she wasn’t trying to please anyone any more. I liked the scenes about her bad dates and her interactions with her son.

I think part of the reason I didn’t love this one is that I just don’t like character-driven novels. There was very little plot to speak of here, so I found it to be somewhat dry. For me to like a character-driven novel, I need to be able to really relate to the main character, and I need them to show significant growth throughout the book. I didn’t really get either of those things, in this case. I’ve never been divorced (or married), so I couldn’t really relate to Liz’s ire. I also didn’t find her all that likable.

Overall, I think this book would be better suited to someone that can identify with Liz’s experiences, and to a reader who enjoys character-driven novels. Luckily it was very short, so I made it through quickly! I will say that I love the color of the spine, so it’ll probably stay on my shelves
