[I received a free ARC of this book through NetGalley. This fact has no bearing on my review.]

2.5 rounded up for sheer fun.

First and foremost, this book was really fun. I was hooked from the beginning and despite all the complaints I have (and there are quite a few) I really did enjoy it. So I wish I didn’t have the complaints I have because then it would be a vastly better book and I would have loved it times a billion and been super happy. It’s well written, interesting concept, and I love that the MCs are a genius ten year old and her slightly clumsy older brother. Pretty sweet, imho.

But. This book is really busy. Really busy. There are like…a whole slew of plots that all hang out for awhile and conveniently interconnect even when they seem to come out of left field. It was super frustrating, because just when something was happening in one corner, we’d shimmy off to another corner and something new would happen and we wouldn’t know it was related until way later on in the novel.

Like. There’s the Robot Winnie’s building. There’s the rats. There’s the Alchemist and his plot. There’s alien dog-nappers. There’s the locked attic. There’s the golden apple. There’s a flying man. There’s Winslow’s being tested for something…

There’s just SO MUCH crammed into this book, it got super frustrating after awhile.

Then there’s the previously mentioned MCs: Winnie and Winslow. This book is touted as Winnie and Winslow Adventure, except they don’t really do a heck of a lot towards furthering the plot. It would be better to be a Cavalcade and Amulet adventure (Winnie’s cat and a neighborhood dog), because they’re the ones who do most of the everything.

So it was a fun read, but not great.
