This book gradually blew me away. Demon is such a clear, compelling, resilient, tragic, tender protagonist and it all comes out in how Kingsolver captures his voice. She perfectly embodies “show, don’t tell” in how the narration shows you so much about living and the lives in Appalachia. Definitely a gut-punch of a novel that I’m so glad to have read. I just finished it and already miss Demon.

A heartbreaking and unvarnished telling of Demon Copperhead's life story.

This book is amazing, but I had to take breaks. It’s a pretty rough story.

This is undoubtedly a great piece of literature, so I’m not really sure why I can’t give it a higher rating. The character development is unparalleled, and Kingsolver has some truly remarkable nuggets of beauty and wisdom nestled in her prose. However, I couldn’t help feeling like I wasn’t sure why the protagonist was writing this book, and I wasn’t convinced that this would be his voice. Also, I felt that there was unnecessary suspense and foreshadowing for a book that is all about growing up and institutional poverty. Could edge into the realm of preachy at times too. I’m happy it ended on a hopeful note - I think the characters deserve that.

This is one of the best books I’ve ever listened to. Highly, highly recommend the audiobook. I love the narrator, and the style.

My favorite line is when he was talking about gossiping in the bathroom and the person you’re talking about is in the stall right next to you. “We can hear you.” And how it feels to be living in the mountains in Virginia and the butt of every American joke.

I think this has made it to my top 5 favorite books. I just finished it and need time to sit with it before writing a real review
