Read this book as soon as you can. Don’t rush it. It’s heartbreaking and hopeful and such an excoriating and beautiful depiction of my home.

You might hit a lull in this but PUSH THROUGH IT. Such an amazing, real, and dark book. So glad I bought this and will probably be recommending it to everyone I know now. Wow

was super hooked the first half - his childhood was so chaotic and sad :( but the persistence wow

what was really noticeable and notable was how the author packed a punch in every paragraph and described things in a very intriguing unique way i haven’t seen before, it was so refreshing. it easily allowed you to envision the scene.  goes through a ton of themes and hardships. i liked how it sounded like an adult narrating their entire life and had notes of humorous retrospective thoughts. ending was so cute 🥺

It's a long book and due back at the library before I could finish. Very good though, I hope to finish it soon.

This book is a beautiful tribute to Appalachia, incorporating its history, its culture, and its problems. Kingsolver did a beautiful job of showing the systemic causes behind the tragedies in these characters’ lives while not excusing them from their own culpability. Both corporate and personal evil are shown and all the complexities behind the opioid crisis and others are drawn clearly. Such heart runs through these pages, I cared about so many of these deeply flawed people.
