Wow. This was a great piece of literature that was a very difficult read. It hurts some really hard, and dark, topics and themes.

I did not look forward to reading some parts of it and had to read it in small bursts. It took me liber than usual to get through it. BUT, it was worth it. It’s decidedly worth the read…just difficult and painful to process. Definitely take a look at the trigger warnings because…damn.

Anybody will tell you, the born  of this world are marked from the get out. Win or lose.

kingsolver certainly had a point to make and she made it well but tied it up a little too neatly for my liking

So hard to read at times but worth enduring. Very compassionate and revealing story about the opioid crisis as well as an overlooked poor, rural area in America. Some very unique, strong characters. I feel like I understand addiction in a deeper way after this book.

A beautifully written, but heartbreaking portrayal of addiction, loss, poverty, abuse and stolen childhoods.

The book follows Demon through his early childhood into his late teens/early 20s. Honestly and openly we are taken through the events of his life and the relationships he gains along the way. Every character is fully realised and has a purpose within the story. Tommy couldn’t be more lovable if he tried. I don’t think I’ll forget the grave scene anytime soon.

The book accurately addresses the opioid epidemic that has, and continues to plague America. I have not read the Dickens novel this book is based on and don’t feel you need to, but I imagine it would add a greater depth to this book.

A literary fiction gem that cannot be missed by those who enjoy a character driven novel that draws on nearly every emotion.

If it gives any indication of this book's quality, I read almost exactly half of this book in one day, a feat I haven't accomplished for any book this size in years. The second half took me a lot longer to get through because it's a lot heavier, but it's just as good. I can't even begin to describe how many iconic quotes are in this book. I couldn't recommend this enough to anyone who loves literary fiction, smalltown America, and a witty as hell protagonist.
