This has been one of my favorite books that I’ve read in the past 5 years.

Demon Copperhead is a hard read. It isn't hard in terms of the actual language of it not making too much sense, but it's hard because you want Demon to stop doing so much shit. You want him to stop suffering, to get help before he loses everything. It's emotional, it's devastating, and, if anything, it is full of hope. Hope to become better, to recover, to mend oneself and become a person who, while still having traumas, is an actual person. Overall fantastic :)

I won’t read anything like this in a long while, if ever. I’ll be back to collect my thoughts once I’ve stopped crying over the enormity of this story.

If your soul doesn’t hurt after reading this one…

I found myself immediately pulled into the story from the start. Demon’s life isn’t great, but they seem to be doing OK for the situation. Until it gets worse. And you get punched in the heart again and again. It’s painful reading all the shit this poor kid continues to go through. All the adults that fail him over and over, even the ones that kinda don’t but still do.

It’s beautifully written. You can see the entire scene. This was one of the issues I had with the story at times though. Too often was a scene over written that I just zoned out until it went back on track. There were also points where too much time was spent on crap that just didn’t feel important. Unfortunately by the 400 page marker I was ready to be done after already hitting the point of “ok this could time jump a bit more” maybe 100 pages earlier.

This book was excellent. The writing was gorgeous, the story was engrossing. I don’t know if it was intentional or not, but the writing style seemed to change as Demon got older. It made me think the writing was reflecting his aging, which I thought was smart. There were a couple things that didn’t sit right with me or rubbed me the wrong way. I felt the ending was wrapped up too quickly. I saw the interpersonal development coming, but I wish it’d been done sooner. I also felt that some of the traumatic things that happened to Demon were a little more detailed than necessary. And I get people having nicknames, but sometimes they all just got lost in the story.
