Beautifully created characters that make it feel like you're reading a true story about real people. Kingsolver delivers another sprawling masterpiece.

This book elicited so many emotions from me sad, mad, laugh out loud at times. Even though told from the perspective of the older character looking back on his childhood the best part of the book was the telling of it through his “grown up before his time” child eyes. The emotion of this book overshadowed my whole life while I was reading it, not sure if it was extra because I have a personal connection to addiction and nurses but I was just rooting so hard for Demon the entire book. To the point of shouting like “get the surgery!” And “you’re worth it!” Other reviews have mentioned that the book felt wrapped up a little fast at the end and I’d agree with that, not many people (especially ones who don’t feel they’re worth it)
would kick opioid addiction after one stint in rehab. And then to have him never get to the ocean!!! Ahhhhhh!!!
I really wanted to read about that rather than imagine it. Charlie Thurston did a PHENOMENAL job reading this story, 5⭐️ for him, he made this story come alive.
