I found out about Octavia Butler wandering around Goodreads and I decided to start with Dawn.
While I was trying to match my mood for a pulp and easy read, I got to find an absolute classic. Compelling, strong and unique.
This fast paced and well written story speaks about difference, consent, love and destiny

Ooooookay. Deep breath.

I loathe what I'm about to say, but...

I just did NOT get this nor connect with it in any way whatsoever. I didn't like who I was supposed to like and, therefore, the characters and their decisions made no sense. Am I supposed to like some of these manipulative, rapist aliens? Am I supposed to NOT like the ax murderer guy who was trying to get everyone away from them? Am I supposed to support Lilith's decisions which were clearly made as a victim of Stockholm syndrome? Cuz I didn't. Not one bit.

The pacing of the plot was so so so so so strange. It felt like a 300 page chapter found midway through another book. I didn't understand any of the world-building with the aliens.

A first encounter with aliens examines what the human race would look like to an alien race. Absolutely engrossing and bone chilling at the same time.
