grief that is militant, unsentimental and unapologetically unvirtuous. pain can be offensive and violent, and the category of victim should never be conflated with innocence. none of this precludes growth and change, of which there's a glimpse toward the end of the book; once time provides enough space for life beyond traumatic immediacy.
