Over all, it was a good time.
The romance could get a bit cringe, but it was fine enough.

Spooky, Gothic, an intimate tale. I wish it hadn't been YA. I feel as though this story would've flourished with older protagonists, leaning harder into the Gothic vibe and darker elements. As it was, it didn't feel completely invested. Also the age of the mc at 17, even though nothing goes beyond kisses, felt ehhhh.

Early on in the book Emile and bram go to the opera together. But we don't see them interact at the opera like at all, and then afterwards Emile tells-not-shows how much he's starting to like bram. I was like hmmm ok that's a weird choice. And there were a few things like that that made the romance(s) not work that well for me. The while gothic horror thing did work... The empty sarcophagus, the mysterious affliction, the secret tunnels. I liked that it wasn't snarky or winking at us about the allusions to the classics, (I've never read the source material specifically but the general feel).
Like some other reviewers, I found the pacing odd. The tension was ratcheting up but could have ratcheted up in fewer cranks. There was not even anything supernatural for the first 2/3. And the telling not showing made for some draggy bits.
But overall-- I liked it. Not able to quantify the liking but overall positive feelings.
