I tried to read this awhile back and couldn't get into it. However, today I decided to get it as an audiobook and I listened to it all in one day. It is a good story, and at 1.5 speed, kept me engaged. I am glad that I gave it a second chance in a different format.

More than just a sports story, it's a great story, better than any fiction could be. Beautifully written, you really get to know these guys so you're pulling for them the whole way. Put off reading the last part because I didn't want it to end.

I enjoy sports biographies. I also enjoy history. This was a great mash-up of the two, with pacing and tension that had me eager to see how this particular journey to the Olympics would play out.

It's very easy to root for these students from Washington, and I understand why the author picked Joe, out of all of them, to be the focal character and the one we spend the most time with. He's got everything you want to see in a feel-good story of people overcoming the odds to achieve something greater than themselves. So, in some ways, you might say this story is a bit predictable or cliche, which isn't totally wrong. But it's told with a compelling voice, and the technical aspects are well done.

Story - 5 ; writing - 3.7

I would have enjoyed the book more if he highlighted info about the background of the other boys and their relationships consistently throughout.

I love a good story about an underdog and recommend for this reason. The writing became a bit monotonous with quotes from journalists and Coach Ulbrickson up to the same old thing.
