These people are literally, as I'm sure others have said, so normal. I don't mean that derogatorily. I really enjoyed the book. I like slice of life even though I don't read or watch it as much as I should. Not as much attention is put into this genre even though it's just as important as any other.

My only issues are with the way it was written. That's more of a personal thing though. I find dialogue to be the most important part of a piece of media involving two or more people and in this book there are no quotation marks. The writing is very, very good, so the issue was when it flipped from being internal and external. Although I'm sure that was intentional. My other issue is I didn't like how their stories went. But that's another personal thing! If only they knew how to just talk to each other! Even still I think they're the kind of people who will get married in the future whether or not they work on themselves. They're it for each other. I like that, but I wish they were healthier!

I was so sad to have to put it down. I have to say that I was in the beginning very skeptical about if I’d like it or not. Part of me didn’t even wanna read it. Now I’m glad I read it. It’s not my favorite cause of the heaviness of the story but it is well written and I enjoyed the relationship between the two mc’s. I do think that anyone that wants to read this should do an extensive look on trigger warnings cause this was so much more than I had expected from what I’ve heard from others. The end killed me. I can’t believe everything that happened within the last 50 pages. I’m happy for them both but also nooooo why did it have to end like that?! Connell is one of the best men out there and nothing can change my mind!

i related to both connell and marianne more than i am comfortable admitting...
so so many lines in this hit incredibly hard. even though nothing really happens i was completely absorbed by the narrative and connell and marianne's relationship. even though it's fairly slow-paced it flies by! i know a lot of people complain about the lack of quotation marks but i didn't notice it at all with the exception of just a few points where i had to double check who was speaking.
the last 30 pages or so annoyed me (can't articulate why, just felt really unsatisfying) but otherwise i really enjoyed  !

Happy 2021 everyone!

My first read of the year was Normal People by Sally Rooney.

Although this book is very hyped, there are mixed reviews about it.
After reading it, I totally understand why.

It’s a short but heavy book and it’s definitely not for everyone.

It talks frankly about complex topics such as depression, suicide, violence and abuse, unhealthy sexual relationships, eating disorders and bullying.

This book is a great character study of a relationship over the course of a few years, but I honestly had a difficult time investing too much into the story of Marianne and Connell.

The relationship dynamic can be frustrating sometimes due to the repetitive nature and the lack of communication.  I also found the coldness and distance of the characterizations off-putting.

If you’re looking for a happy and romance book this is not it.
This is a book about relationships that is painfully real.

CW: Toxic relationship, domestic abuse, emotional and physical abuse, sexual content, sexual abuse, rape, child abuse, bullying, eating disorders, mental ilness, suicidal thoughts/suicide
