Normal People was a… difficult read for me.

There were times where I really felt for the characters, relating to them during hard hitting moments and reflecting upon my own similar past experiences. Yet, there were so many more times where these characters simply drove me insane.

This entire book consists of two people-both entirely unable to communicate or really even function properly-repeatedly falling in and out of a relationship with each other.

It. Was. A. Drag.

I can’t remember how many times I’ve yelled at them both to just MOVE ON! Clearly their relationship is not working and something needs to change. But instead they both just remain miserable until reconnecting and then falling apart again.

And their severe codependency for one another did not feel romantic in the slightest. Especially for Marianne, who even by the end of the book seemed to find her only sense of self worth through however Connell viewed her. And although I do relate to her struggles, that’s all the more reason why I desperately wanted her to get AWAY from Connell and find love for herself on her own terms. Not just cling to him more!

There was nothing but a few sweet moments between these two that had ever made me feel like I wanted to root for them. Maybe if they had tried harder, maybe if for a while things had gotten better. But they didn’t. Throughout the entire book they had both stayed the same.

Tldr, this book was seriously not for me.
