I really enjoyed On the Come Up and the story it told of Bri's life and the struggles she has to face.

I thought it had some really believable scenes where the characters actually act their age and respond to situations as teenagers and different from one another due to their own life experiences. That everyone is different and even between friends people will respond differently to one another and no one response is right or wrong.
Whilst I'm sure it is accurate for a lot of people it was infuriating to see Bri bottling everything up and never talking to anyone about her problems and instead trying to take on the world. I was happy that she did find a good support network for herself.
I was also shocked as an Australian just how different the schooling systems are between us and the United States.

All in all I thought this was a story that really highlighted all the different struggles that people can go through.

I don't know that I would have found this book without the Seattle Public Library book bingo 2023 challenge for the category Hip Hop, but I'm so glad I did. I listened to it and the narrator is truly outstanding, world class, as good as the narrator for Harry Potter. I got so invested in the characters that by the last chapter I had to stop reading and ask someone if anything terrible was going to happen
it doesn't

Listen to this book and then come tell me how much you loved it.

This was a really interesting viewpoint of internalised and externalised racism from the viewpoint of an African-American teen from the rough side of L.A. It was inspiring seeing a girl go from blaming everyone else for her problems to realising where her own faults lie and working on them and learning how to find joy in a society that doesn’t always treat her fairly.
