I really love his painting, but I wasn’t keen on the story: artist as a bumbling, arrogant, vile creep. Not that it isn’t sometimes true to life though…

Ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew
The art was pretty but the lack of conclusion and consequences for the main character made his graphic prevertions seem like wierd, random wish fulfillment for the author.

the art itself was amazing, i can’t imagine coming up with it, but some of the story was icky 3 also what was up with that ending? (tw: sex with a minor :/, also mistreatment of a mentally ill person)

ok i understand people are saying the main character is a douche but the story is self aware. (minor spoilers ahead)

that’s cool but he’s still sooo annoying… even if his project fails and it’s obvious that he’s awful and rude and disgusting, it doesn’t make the book any more pleasant to read. and that’s not an original message that we need to hear again, we all know this already

Yes the main character was unlikeable, yes the plot was boring, but oh my god my eyes were feasting on the delicious colours and layers if these paintings. Beautiful visuals.

Got this from the library on the basis of its fascinating cover and an intriguing first page. The watercolor artwork is gorgeous throughout, but the story really failed to interest me. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop (something interesting to happen), or maybe for more of the philosophy from that fist page. (It reappears, but just as a reiteration, not elaboration.)

5 stars for art, 3 for narrative.

A slightly charming, yet kinda pretentious look at art and society with gorgeous artwork.
Enjoyed

I love Brecht Evens books, the colourful and chaotic illustrations pull me in from the moment I open it.
In 'the making of' I really liked the short story in the beginning and the repetition of that same story at the end, where it makes a lot more sense.

Former Talking Head frontman David Byrne takes readers on a panoramic yet personal journey through music as an artform, an experience, and a product, hitting upon music hall architecture, digital technology, studio experimentation, stage performance, songwriting, corporate music biz, psycho-acoustics, and the psychology of listening and fandom. Unique and essential for music lovers.
