The descriptions were so lush, Feyi was such a compelling POV character, the career B-plot was so good, the grief was so realistic, the side characters so good and also useful to the romance A-plot, ugh, it was all so good!
My opinions were definitely colored coming in by having Tumblr blogger batmanisagatewaydrug repeatedly rec this as a romance. It wasn't sorted as such by my library and without that genre convention, I would have been a little more lost and perhaps, I hate to say, troubled, by her falling in love with her friend's father. OTOH, I like to think I still would have been won over by how sweet, hot, and beautiful the descriptions of their interactions were.

You Made A Fool of Death with Your Beauty

🎧 Narrator: Bahni Turpin 🎧
This is a complex book that is hard for me to really wrap my feelings and thoughts around.
I really loved the female empowerment throughout. Feyi was unapologetic, strong, and confident in her choices. She went after what she wanted but was thoughtful and considerate, despite a complicated choice. I loved that she was not about to take any nonsense from the men in this book. She didn’t owe anyone anything and she lets them know it.
I also thought the exploration of grief was absolutely stunning. These moments were tender and emotional and just really beautifully done.
The things that didn’t work for me… the beginning of the book started with a bang (literally 🔥) and I found it jarring. I do feel like the writing got better and better as the book went along. Emezi found their flow and you could feel it. I really struggled with the men in this book though. Maybe that was the point? But there are two main male characters and both of them were seriously ick to me in different ways.
This was a very sensual and intimate story. It has great queer and diverse representation. Female empowerment will always be a win for me in a book. I know Feyi’s character has gotten a bad rap for choices made, but for me it was the men who need to be looked at, not her.
🎧 Bahni Turpin’s narration was really lovely!

A beautiful, special book. I love how Emezi writes; that has remained unchanged. That said, I'm not a romance novel person, and compared to other things they've written, this wasn't my thing. Even if we leave that aside for a moment, I found the central romance unconvincing, unbalanced, and (if there were to be a sequel that took place in real life) destined for doom
