If you like drama, you’re in for a good ride. This girl is MESSY but heart breaking-ly honest. Especially if you’ve suffered a loss. I’m not going to give any spoilers, but I highly recommend. Could be a fairytale depending on where your morals lie.
I was so excited to read You Made a Fools of Death with Your Beauty after seeing the rave reviews and buzz around this novel. I’ve read some of Akwaeke Emezi’s previous work and have really enjoyed their style.
The writing is definitely lush and beautiful and the first half really held my attention. The main character Feyi felt incredibly real in her experiences with friendship, loss, and dating. But the book loses much of its depth in the second half. Without giving anything away, I’ll say it feels contrived, ridiculous, and honestly completely unbelievable. I disliked most of the characters by the end. The storyline becomes slow and chaotic and the love story at the center feels maudlin at best.
You may want to read this novel to see what all the buzz is about or to appreciate the florid language, but personally, I felt really disappointed that the book never fulfills its potential.

this book is messy as hell and i loved it. is everyone involved weird as hell for these decisions? yes. except for Joy, that’s my sister. hopefully we get the Joy sequel eventually

Lushest writing, steamy romance and excellent character insights
a lovely take on grief and what it’s like falling in love again, plus beautiful writing style. I loved the balance between love, heartbreak, and humor. I read on audiobook and really enjoyed it!

While the prose and descriptions were beautiful, there were times that it was distracting or boring. I was drawn into several parts of the book, however, I often was not compelled to pick it up frequently.

The ending makes the story feel rather incomplete, but this was pretty successful at making me empathise with a protagonist whose choices often aren’t immediately understandable.
