Maybe a 4 since I actually finished it but I’m still deciding. It’s uber slow, which I can assume was a factor the author wanted to have because the whole point is about feeling trapped in the house. But it was a little hard for me to keep my momentum.
However, the detail in the clothing, architecture and the state of Howard was so striking. When he spit in her mouth, I literally had to put the book down because what the hell. Florence was also rightfully really annoying. I would definitely read this book if you want a slow burn, both plot wise and romantic. And if you really enjoy just the aesthetics of gothic literature, if that makes sense. Also need me a hyper informed Francis who will tell me random facts about mushrooms. Like..that dynamic was sooo cute!
However, the detail in the clothing, architecture and the state of Howard was so striking.
This book was not for me.
I borrowed the audiobook from Libby. The narrator’s cadence was so repetitive and unfitting to what she was reading it drove me absolutely bonkers. That alone made me want to stop reading [listening].
Oh, Why didn’t I stop reading? *cries in stubborn*
The main character, Noemi, is a pretentious stuck up snob (her character was actually a bit inconsistent which was really annoying to follow) who is set with the task of rescuing her cousin, who appears to have lost her mind, from a moldy, dark mansion.
All the characters living in the mansion, including Noemi’s cousin are severely undeveloped- as in, they’re all the same. And that same-ness is plaster dry. *none* of the characters are remotely like-able, which put me in the mode: I don’t care what happens to anyone.
The big reveal, I guess what everyone is calling the ‘twist’, happens in an e x t e n d e d (I HATE IT WHEN AUTHORS DO THIS) dialog between Noemi and Francis. It was like chewing tasteless jerky that just wouldn’t chew.
Insert a lot of ‘American Horror Story-esq’ scenes (ie: buzzing flies, blistering pustules, maggots) that didn’t really fit in the story line and I guess you got your ‘Gothic Horror’.
I don’t really know what the author was trying to do. None of the characters where given enough run time for you to get to know them either way - save for Noemi, the main character, who didn’t have any like-able qualities at all - and even *she* was incredibly inconsistent. There was quite a bit of useless chitter throughout the book that did nothing to add to the story. At one point it seemed maybe the author was attempting to make the house alive? And, then, near the end, she was she trying to create a love story between Noemi and Francis that felt forced and…just bizarre.
This was a weird, aimless story with a lot of dry characters and extended, equally as dry, dialog.
I am so sorry. This is the first book I have read in a long, long time that I just cannot find anything to say that I liked about it.

I did not enjoy this book. It was so very slow for me and I had to really force myself to read it. I didn't engage with the characters. I hated that they made them all speak English. I wanted more involvement from the sideline characters. I just thought it was dull. That last line too. Gave me the ick.
