once again this year I have landed on disappointment island and I'm trying to find my way back to the luxurious ship I have left for this waste of paper called book.

Mexican Gothic is neither mexican and neither gothic. this book reminded me so much of House of Hunger, because just like this little fellow, it was one of the biggest floops I've had so far in the past 7 months of 2023. the story had so much potential but it was too rushed and everything solved way too quickly. there were so many details missing, so much lore-holes and the characters were so flat. the antagonists were evil but that was literally their only character trait.

AND OUR MC NOEMÍ GOT ON MY NERVES SO HARD. LISTEN TO ME SENIORITA BECAUSE I WILL NOT REPET MYSELF: MY MATH NOTEBOOK IS MORE INTERESTING THAN YOU AND HAS MORE THAN ONE INEXISTENT BRAIN CELL. NOW GIVE YOURSELF A SLAP AND STOP BEING INSUFFERABLE.

I won't rate it one star because I loved some things about this story: I liked Francis – even if he was just as dull as the whole character cast, I liked Virgil because he is indeed an unlikable character and I think miss Silvia did a great job here and I liked the lore of the Doyle family (with its big holes and unanswered questions). and of course I loved the grotesque images that miss Silvia painted in black ink on white paper.

yet, these weren't enough to please me, not at all.

such a shame. this was one of my most anticipated reads this year.
