This is the first piece to explain federated social media in a way that makes sense and is good, so major points on that. This is Doctorow’s treatise on the internet barons and how they got to be so big and control so much of our lives - and how we can claw things back, both individually and through legislation and action from government. The internet sucks now, and Doctorow does a good job of explaining why and the feeling we have about our hyper capitalist overlords. It’s very familiar if you’re read Doctorow’s non-fiction before, or his threads on Twitter, but here it’s fleshed out and discussed in a straightforward manner.
