What did I love about this read?

Trick question!

There was everything to love about this book and when I run into a book like that, my favorite quotes representing the major themes show the power it has best:

There’s discussion about race:
“Why she is calling her Abroad people’s white and black when colors are for crayons and things. I know that not everybody is having the same color skin in Nigeria, even me and kayos and born-boy don’t have the same skin color, but nobody is dallying anybody black or white, everybody is just calling us by our names: Adunni, Kayus, Born-boy. That’s all.”

The power of education:
“Your schooling is your voice, child. It will be speaking for you even when you don’t open your mouth to talk.”

“Learning is not having an age. Anybody can learn.”

A reminder that western culture shouldn’t be the standard:
“English is not the measure of intelligent mind and sharp brain.”

Caring about others:
“You must do good for other peoples, even if you’re not well, even if the whole world around you is not well.”

A girl who wants to make her mark:
“Not his-story [...] my own will be called her-story.”

And most of all hope, despite the horribleness one may face:
“I am not a wasted waste; I am Adunni. A person enough because my tomorrow will be better than today.”

This book will break your heart, cheer for the main character Adunni, and make you want to make your mark too.
