The Girl With The Louding Voice by Abi Daré was a difficult and traumatic read, but well worth the time. This heartbreaking story makes you want to crawl into the pages and hug Adunni as tight as you can as her childhood unfolds. While I’m not typically a fan of stories written phonetically, Daré’s style here helps to solidify Adunni’s place in society and her lack of education. This is such a moving read, but, full-disclosure, I found it hard to get through given the subject matter’s weight. I do highly recommend this book, but be warned that it is not a happy read, nor an easy one. This book handles real life events for so many women (really, young girls who become women too soon), and though it is a fictional account, it doesn’t make these situations any less real. This book will make you think about others on an entirely new plain, but it is well worth it.

This story follows a young woman in Nigeria as she deals with the loss of her family, forced marriage, interruption of education, enslavement, and sexual assault. As she passes through each of these hurdles, education remains a central focus in her life.

Very enjoyable and hopeful read. The writing was set in the same way the main character Adunni wrote and while it does take a second to get used to, it adds so much to the atmosphere. Adunnis point of view felt very hopeful and refreshing, even as she was experiencing some very traumatic events.
Will definitely read anything else Abi Daré publishes!
