I finished The Girl With the Louding Voice today, and this book moved me in ways that a book hasn't in a long time. I'm a high school student in the USA, but even with me being so different than Adunni, I found myself relating to her in so many ways. I also feel like I learned so much more from her story and her pain. The writing of this novel is so beautiful and unique. It is written in broken English at first, which was an adjustment, but it really fit the story, and I felt like I could clearly hear Adunni's voice and thoughts. There was not a single place in the entire book where I was not fully wrapped up in Adunni's story. I really recommend this story to anyone. It can be emotional and graphic at times, but it really brings a personal perspective to deeply important issues.  I feel like my perspective has widened so much. I can't say enough about this book, for sure one my absolute favorite books this year, if not of all time!

My first impressions (Writing down my first impressions of the book. NOT an in-depth review. Reviews base on personal enjoyment.)
RANK: Astonishing

This is a solid debut novel.

Abi Dare manages to write about a story about a young girl’s wiliness to get an education even if life is beating her down. Despite being a Literary Fiction book, I was kind of convince that I was read a memoir at times. Adunni feels like a real character. Her determination to be coming a Teacher is gripping. By the end of the book, I was happy and optimistic for her future.

One thing I was glad that Dare didn’t do is to talk about protecting the environment. There is a character who wants to protect the environment. I thought that Dare was going to write a few pages about the subject. Fortunately, she didn’t go that route. In my opinion, it would have made the book lose it focus. I’m all for protecting the environment but the topic should in another book.

This book is hard to read at time. At least me, not enough to put the book down but it made me uneasy.

Overall, Astonishing debut. I will read be reading her future books.

I didn't like this one as much as I thought I would. It was TRAGIC for the first 200 pages, tragedy after horrible thing one right after the other. I've heard some people refer to this book as "tragedy porn" and I don't disagree.

That being said, the last 166 pages were light and full of hope. Adunni is an excellent character, and I think that's why it was so damn hard to watch her experience the hells she was put into. She was funny, and smart, and feisty. I really loved her, and I think she'll stick with me for a long time.

There were parts that were so disgusting or violent, I felt it took me out of the book. I honestly felt it was added for shock value, to really the nail the sadness of Adunni's life home, but I found it unnecessary. I have a high tolerance for gore and violence, but some parts were too much for me.

This isn't a book I feel I can recommend to anyone because of it's many content warnings. But if this sounds interesting to you, it's a beautifully written story.
